In recent years, extraordinary development of science and technology has led to the automation of clinical practices. However, recently medical staff shortage, especially shortage of doctors, is becoming a serious problem. Under these circumstances, specialists who have a high degree of professionalism to support the role of medical doctors are absolutely necessary for providing patients with high-quality medical services.

Based on these stands, we intend to develop a new type of specialists with double licenses: One type includes clinical engineers who operate life supporting devices. The other one is medical technologists who perform clinical examinations at a laboratory. We now have a strong belief that these new specialists will play an important role in the near future of medical care. So we propose that the technologists with these two licenses be called "Clinical Technologists".

Characteristics of the curriculum

The aim of our department is to educate students to become clinical engineers and medical technologists. For this purpose, our academic disciplines have been revised as compulsory subjects in order to acquire two licenses in four years. In their first year, students should take the following foundation subjects: introduction to medicine, electrical engineering, introduction to biomedical engineering, physiology, biochemistry, and anatomy. During the 2nd and 3rd year, they should take the following special subjects: mechanical engineering, material engineering, clinical hematology, clinical chemistry, clinical immunology, and so on. In the final year, they are expected go out to receive clinical training in hospitals in Niigata or other prefectures in order to acquire practical skills to work as clinical engineers and medical technologists.

There is no doubt that having these two licenses can lead to getting a better job for graduates. They can get information about job offers for medical technologists and clinical engineers. The engineer with two licenses will be needed not only in hospitals but also in other medical institutions, and they will become valuable assets to many types of institutions. For these reasons, having two licenses would definitely make the job hunting easier.

Prospective places of employment are the followings: university hospitals, specialty hospitals, medical examination centers, food companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment manufacturers, public health centers, civil services, educational institutions and research institutions.


Our clinical engineering laboratories have life-maintenance and control systems, ultrasonographs, electrocardiographs and electroencephalographs, and so on. Students learn various techniques required for clinical engineers and medical technologists. The chemical laboratories have automated analyzers, fully automatic blood cell counters, electrophoresis systems, absorption spectrophotometers, microplate readers, and so on. Students learn material inspection techniques in biochemistry, hematology, and immunology. They are divided into small groups and practical work is performed in each group.

In the microbiology laboratory, equipment required for bacteriological examination and genetic testing are installed. Students learn inspection techniques in these fields using the equipment supplied. As a strategy against biohazard, air cleaners are used in the lab, and white coat after practical work can be sterilized with ultraviolet irradiation in a locker. With the help of microscopes, students can examine various specimens in the labs. The observed images are projected on a large monitor so that the students can discuss the issue in depth with their supervisors. By using this apparatus, students will be able to master skills required for clinical engineers in the future.

International activities

To make our students engineers with a global vision, we provide them with opportunities to meet clinical engineers or medical technologists in other countries. Especially, we aim to enhance their foreign-language skills through the international exchange of students.
