Background
Niigata University of Health and Welfare was established in 2001. Soon after the establishment of the university, the International Exchange Committee was organized. Since then, the committee has taken an important role in the international affairs of the university. The purpose of the international exchange committee is; 1. To develop good relationships with foreign universities and academic institutions and to upgrade the ability of research and education at the university; 2. To propagate scientific knowledge and the experiences of the university to the world; 3. To improve students' proficiency in English and let them obtain sufficient ability to work internationally.
Usually, there are nine members of the international committee. The vice-president of the university attends the committee and gives advice. Two members of the staff belonging to the administration department participate in the committee. Generally, the committee is held once per month After reporting the results of the committee to the president, key decisions are announced at the faculty meetings.
The routine work of the committee is; 1. To evaluate proposals for grants for international activities. These grants include mini-symposiums, international cooperation on research and various projects; 2. To evaluate proposals relating to students' overseas study trips; 3. International collaboration on health issues through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the policies of the Official Development Assistance (ODA); 4. To establish memorandums of understanding for cooperation with foreign universities, and; 5. Other international matters.
