Strategic Development Initiatives for the Niigata University of Health and Welfare

Mission

The University was established in 2001. At the time of its establishment, a mission statement was declared in order to provide Quality of Life (QOL) to those who need help accessing health and social welfare services, to contribute to the community, and to promote international exchanges.

Basic Goals for the University:

1. Long-term Goals (2010-2020)
In order to achieve the mission for fostering the health professionals who will work in the increasingly aged society , we aim to increase the number of students from 2800 to 5000 within 10 years.

2. Mid-term Goals (2010-2013)
To produce qualified QOL supporters, we provide educational support for all our students and the graduates who can work not only in local communities, but also in many parts of the world. In addition, we provide basis for education and research according to the following ten domains: campus development, presentation of public information, improvement of education, promotion of student support, inviting skilled professionals from outside for our faculty development, research development, support for alumni association and lifelong education, promotion of the cooperation among community, industry and university, promotion of international academic exchanges, and a reform of our university administration and staff development.

1) Educational instruction is referred to as "the five STEPS for qualified QOL supporters". The STEPS are the initial letters of the following words:

  1. (1) Scientific reasoning based on evidence
    The main specific behavioral objective (SBO) of this step is to gain basic knowledge and techniques about each specialized area of professions based on evidence-based health and social welfare.
  2. (2) Teamwork and leadership
    To work well together in teams consisting of persons from various professions
  3. (3) Empowerment and communication skills
    To empower clients to make decisions, and take actions, to improve their QOL
    To empower clients, professionals need to master communication skills
  4. (4) Problem-solving
    To point out a problem or difficult situation encountered, to suggest the best method to solve the problem, and to take the initiative in carrying out the plan
  5. (5) Self-realization
    To make every effort to the best to his/her own ability in order to accomplish the goal, and to feel a sense of accomplishment

2) Our behavioral objective is to provide students as well as the alumni with various kinds of educational and academic services at any time, place and occasion, in order to become qualified QOL supporters.
The university applying the ideal of educational and academic services is defined as "mendomi no yoi daigaku" in Japanese.
